Rediscovering Hope Through the Lens of Suffering

Why True Thanks-Giving is Done With a Kiss

November 20, 2017 By Rachel Lee 30 Comments

Don't miss out on this FREE Thanksgiving bundle with subscription to monthly newsletter! Want to know how to cultivate a TRUE heart of thanks-giving this holiday season? Allow me to let you in on a little secret- it has much less to do with the gifts, and much more to do with the Giver. Read here to find out how God gave me a fresh new perspective on the attitude of gratitude, when I was forced to lay aside my self-inflicted expectations, for a better way! Plus, learn what it means to truly give thanks. (Hint- be prepared to be surprised!)

I have a confession to make.

I have a tendency to be a people-pleaser. I often do things because I think it’s what is expected of me, not necessarily because I feel strongly about it.

In the blogging community, we are inundated with expectations.

-Expected to write meaningful essays that meet a specific need within our audience.

-Expected to meet deadlines.

-Expected to build relationships.

-Expected to be consistent.

-Expected to make lasting impressions.

So on and so forth.

With the holidays quickly approaching, I began to feel the weight of expectation once again.

Beginning somewhere in mid-October, my newsfeed became overpopulated with articles written on the topic of Thanksgiving. So I assumed I should probably do the same.

And I tried.

I thought long and hard. I tapped in to my memory bank. I made a plan.

I added specific themes to my idea book. I read similar articles on the topic for inspiration. I even researched the word, thanksgiving in order to gain a deeper understanding of its meaning.

I studied the scriptures, and meditated on verses about giving thanks, especially in the Psalms.

And I prayed. A lot. Everyday.

But I had nothing. NOTHING.

Each time I tried to put my pen to paper, (or in this case, my fingers to keyboard), I drew a blank.

How is it I can’t seem to write about a holiday designated to giving thanks? I thought to myself.

It’s not as if I’m not thankful. On the contrary, I have MUCH to be thankful for! I know this. So, what is my problem?

“Why is this so hard?” I asked aloud.

When Danger Lurks Unaware

November 15, 2017 By Rachel Lee 26 Comments

Have you ever had a spiritual slumber, of sorts, set in? You delay reading your bible, reasoning that you'll get around to it later. You get busy, preoccupied and distracted with the cares of the world, forgetting what truly matters. Your helping hands become weary, and praying knees get lazy. A spiritual slumber sets in. And then the enemy pounces! Peter warns us about the importance of staying alert to the enemies schemes. Click here to read more about my encounter with the devourer.

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

I awoke to the stench of smoke wafting through my bedroom windows.

It’s not unusual for the neighbors to have a bonfire that lasts well into the night, so I wasn’t too concerned initially.

I kicked off my blanket and sluggishly walked towards the stairwell, preparing to make my descent, when I noticed a thin layer of grey dust covering the banister.

Slightly perplexed, I continued down the stairs, unsure of what I might find.

Although there didn’t appear to be a reason for alarm, something felt off.

The morning sky was hazier than usual, and the moon looked sinister; adorned in colors of red and orange.

After a closer look, I realized that the same “grey dust” that covered the stairwell banister, coated the grass like a mantle. Ash.

It was ash!

I scrolled frantically through my phone. My newsfeed was crowded with posts from friends who spoke about a forest fire, set ablaze, in my hometown’s backyard.

Unreal!

What If It’s Not About Me: Discover God’s Purpose for Brokenness in the Bible

November 8, 2017 By Rachel Lee 63 Comments

What if instead of asking the question, why me? We ought to be asking, who for? Discover the powerful truth about God's purpose for brokenness in the Bible. #brokenness #suffering #grief #purpose #hope #faith

There are several examples of brokenness in the bible, and its purpose is made clear. But it may not be what we would expect..

Many years ago, when I was still young in my faith, I recall praying a very dangerous prayer.

“Lord, I love you, and I want to honor you with my life. I invite you to use me however you deem worthy. I will go wherever you will call me, and do whatever you will ask of me, even if it means that I am broken.”

We’ve all heard the saying, be careful what you ask for, because you just might get it.

Little did I know the weight that my words would carry.

Not long after whispering that heart-felt prayer into the quiet of night, my infant daughter was unexpectedly killed in a tragic car accident.

Broken, I was.

“Then He ordered the crowds to recline on the grass, and looking up to heaven, He gave thanks and blessed, and broke the loaves and handed them to the disciples, who gave them to the people.” (Matthew 14:19)

So often, when we are forced to endure hardship, we have a tendency to make our brokenness all about us.

Why me, God? Why did you let this happen? Where were you? Why didn’t you save me? What did I do to deserve this?

Why her? Why him? Why us? Why now?

But maybe, just maybe, these are the wrong types of questions.

When God Invites Our Enemies to Dinner

November 1, 2017 By Rachel Lee 38 Comments

A few weeks ago I attended a women’s bible study. As we discussed the fruit of the spirit, “goodness,” we dove into the scriptures. One of them being, Psalm 23:5

“He will prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm 23:5)

As we chewed on this passage of scripture, there was a particular phrase that stood out to me. Actually, it reached out and grabbed me by the gut, is more like it.

“He prepares a table for me in the presence of my enemies.”

That part is worth repeating!

“He prepares a table for me IN THE PRESENCE OF my enemies.”

Catch that? In the presence of. Not in the absence of.

That immediately caught my attention, and I took it home and meditated on it for days.

Chewed on it.

Wrestled with it.

I’ve been walking with God long enough to know that when the Holy Spirit causes a piece of scripture to jump off the page, there is something more that He wants me to see; to take notice of.

A fresh revelation He longs to impart.

This post contains some of the MOST inspiring faith-based linkup parties, for christian women today! This is a great resource for both christian bloggers and readers alike! Take a peek by clicking here! #inspiration #faithwriter #christianblogger #linkup #blogparty #community

What is a linkup party, you ask?

A blog linkup party is a place for bloggers to share their amazing content among their fellow blogging community, AND a place for readers to reap the benefits of having several inspiring articles featured, all under one roof!

Within most linkup parties, bloggers take a few minutes to read some of the other content being shared, and encourage their blogger friends by commenting, and sharing several articles via social media. In this way, we help to support our blogging community, and nurture genuine relationships that naturally grow out of such an environment.

This is the main reason I enjoy linking arms with my friends!

Readers benefit by having several articles within their preferred niche, conveniently grouped together on the same page. This lessens the amount of time spent browsing the web, searching for articles a person tends to gravitate towards.

It really is a WIN-WIN for everyone!

Now that you know the what and the why behind linkup parties, allow me to share with you some of my FAVORITE blog linkups for today’s christian woman.
