Rediscovering Hope Through the Lens of Suffering

Discover Your Calling

September 1, 2017 By Rachel Lee 6 Comments

Ever wondered what your calling is? Your God-given purpose in life?

If you’re like the majority, you’ve probably wrestled with questions concerning the call of God on your life; the one mission that is designed specifically for you.

So many of us struggle through seas of frustration; being tossed to and fro, as we try to identify our true calling. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard someone say, in utter exasperation, “I just wish I knew what my calling is!” It’s as if all of life’s accomplishments hang on discovering this one truth!

If I knew what my calling was…

…then I could make a difference.

…then I might be worth something.

…then I could really get moving.

…then I would be able to follow God.

…then life would be fulfilling.

The fact is every day presents itself with an opportunity to make a difference. We just need to pay attention.

Here are a few thoughts that might help you navigate through the confusion of discovering your true calling?

Football and God

September 1, 2017 By Rachel Lee 3 Comments

I wouldn’t consider myself a huge football fan necessarily, but of all the sports, it is my favorite to watch.

I do, however, consider myself a huge Seahawks fan. Especially when we have a quarterback like Russell Wilson playing for us.

Russell Wilson is the NFL quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks.

Well known for his christian faith, Russel is frequently seen on the field praying with his team, and glorifying God at the end of each game; win or lose.

As protocol, Russell is often called upon to give a quick post-game interview, recapping the plays of the game. Both good and bad.

But there was one interview, in particular, that gave me all the *feels.*

In this particular interview, Russell was asked why he threw the last play to Jermaine Kearse. Kearse had clearly made several mistakes during the game, almost costing us the win.

Russell’s response to the interview question was epic!

He stated that he continued to throw the ball to Kearse throughout the game, because he knew what he was capable of. Despite the bad plays he had previously made, ( and I think we can all agree that there were some bad plays), Russell knew what Kearse could do! He believed in him.

Russell continued to say that right before the last play of the game, he looked out across the field, locked eyes with Kearse, pointed to him, and confidently said, “I’ll be looking for you. I’m going to keep coming back to you, and we’re going to find a way to win the game. You’re going to bring us home.”

And boy, did he!

An Unlikely Hero

August 31, 2017 By Rachel Lee 2 Comments

The Lord said to Elijah, “go and live near the city of Sidon. There is a widow there who will feed you. I have given her my instructions.” So he went. As he arrived at the gates of the city, he saw a widow gathering sticks, and he asked her for a cup of water. As she was on her way, he said :bring me a bite of bread too.” But she said, “I swear by the Lord your God that I haven’t a single piece of bread in the house, and I only have a handful of flour, and a little cooking oil in the bottom of the jar. I was just gathering a few sticks to cook this last meal, and then my son and I must die of starvation.” (1 Kings 17:8-12)

I find this story to be fascinating! Perhaps it is the idea of God using the unlikeliest of hero’s as a means of provision.

1 Kings 17:2-7 says “the Lord used the Ravens to provide Elijah with food, every morning and evening.”

RAVENS….brought him food! How very unlikely!

And there’s this widow.

Not just ANY widow, mind you, but a Sidonian woman, (Sidon was an enemy of Israel), living alone with her son; poor, and on the brink of starvation due to the drought.

And God uses her?!

Isn’t it just like God to use the unlikeliest of hero’s?

The lowliest of the low.

The undesirable.

The poor.

The ordinary.

The unexpected….to be our savior.

Follow Me

August 31, 2017 By Rachel Lee 3 Comments

God still speaks today. He offers words of life and guidance to all who will listen. In this short devotion, my prayer is that you'll hear the heart of the Father towards you- His daughter,, as He speaks words of affirmation over you. #godspeaks #devotions #christianliving #womenofgod #guidance #followme

And He said to her,

“There is a path that leads to righteousness; a straight and narrow path.

Follow me.

I’ll be your guide.

I’ll look after you.

Keep your eyes focused on me, so your heart doesn’t wander, and you lose your footing.

If you find your eyes beginning to stray- to the left or to the right- look to me.

I will hold your attention.

I will help you to refocus.

When the light begins to fade, and the day turns into night- do not fear.

When you can no longer see the path before you, or my presence beside you- hold tight!

I am here. Listen for the sound of my voice.

I have not left you. I am singing over you.

Walking without sight requires careful attention.

And faith.

Be alert. Stay close.

You may be tempted to feel frustrated with the slow progress made in the dark, but you’ll notice that in these times of darkness, there is less to distract you.

Simply follow the sound of my voice.

One step at a time.

In times of silence, when all is quiet, let your feet come to a halt.

Be still. Cease from striving. Refrain from moving.

Bask in these times of rest until I beckon you onward.

This is how it looks to follow me.”

~Your Beloved

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.“ (John 10:27)

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (Deut 31:8)

Treasures of Darkness

August 31, 2017 By Rachel Lee 3 Comments

And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness—

   secret riches.

I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord,

the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.

~Isaiah 45:3

This was the scripture that the Lord spoke to me, shortly after my daughter died, in 2005. I admit that my initial response to this verse was rather negative.

“Really God? What treasures could there possibly be lurking in the darkness?”

No. I was not a fan of this verse, at first.

Even if there WERE treasures; secret riches hiding in the darkness, could they ever make up for the agony of losing my child? Never! What a ridiculous thought!

I tucked this verse away, refusing to be comforted by it.

Occasionally I would pull it out of the recesses of my mind, shake my head at it, mock it, and tuck it back away where it could no longer assault my heart.

Then, some time later, I began to challenge the Lord.
