“We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
My three year old has this habit of climbing up onto my lap at random times throughout the day, nuzzling her head into my chest, and whispering, “I love you too, mom.”
Her term of endearment brings a smile to my face. And I can’t help but giggle a little too. She never waits for me to say, “I love you,” first, as is the typical order of affection in most relationships. She simply expresses her reciprocal love for me, as though she is already keenly aware of my love for her.
A few mornings ago, this same scenario played itself out once again, and as it did, I heard the Lord speak. “Oh, that my children would be so confident in my love, as this.”
It struck me.. how many times do we come before the Father, our heart’s laid bare in an expression of love, all the while waiting for His assurance of love in return? When we curl up in Papa God’s lap, is there a tendency to question whether, in fact, He loves us too?
I couldn’t help but think that maybe my daughter was on to something here?
Later that same evening, following this interaction with my three year old, I decided to try something new. After I brought my requests before the Lord in prayer, I finished my petitions with, “I love you too, dad.”
It may seem like a silly practice. A minor play on words. But I can’t begin to tell you what a difference it made in my heart. In essence, it’s a way of saying I KNOW that You love me, Lord. I don’t need You to validate it, for I am already sure of it.
And there is a tender beauty in that.
May we always be so sure of the Father’s love, as my young child is in her mama’s.

Thank you, Father God, for the assurance of Your love. May we never forget how wide, how long, how high and how deep Your love is for us, that we can KNOW with confidence and full assurance of faith, that there is never a question of Your great love. We love, because You first loved us! In Jesus’ name, amen.
