Summertime is FINALLY here, and this mama could not be happier about it! Do you remember when school break during the summer lasted a full three months? Oh, how I wish those long summer days would return..
Here in the PNW our schools let out for a mere two month break in the summer, and we are guaranteed (if we’re lucky) three months of warm, sunny weather, lasting anywhere from late June to mid September.
It’s difficult to not feel the pressure to squeeze in all of the things. Especially because our time is so limited. Anyone else?
Our Favorite Summer Activity
Although there are several things we like to take advantage of during the short summer months, the one thing we are sure to never miss, is our regular camping adventures!
We have eight children, ranging in ages two to twenty-four. Seven of those eight, still live in the home, and accompany us on all camping trips, therefor this is no small feat!
My husband and I made it a rule in our early years of marriage, that we would never cease to continue camping, simply due to difficulty. And let me assure you – sometimes it IS difficult!
With babies in tow, and differing work schedules, it can certainly prove to be a challenge to prioritize our family trips together. But I would never want to miss out on those blessed memories made during these adventures.
- The sounds, smells and beauty of nature.
- Early morning walks.
- Late night dips in the lake.
- Campfire food.
- A game of Kick the Can in the dark.
- Talks around the bonfire.
- Cuddled up in the tent together.
- The bonding, the laughter, the slower-paced living..
There is nothing quite like it!

Unfortunately, I am not a camper. I love hiking, birding, and trail running, but I don’t enjoy sleeping in a tent or cooking outside. To each his/her own! Summertime is my favorite time of year.

Love what you shared and enjoy for summer. Some of my things would be: sitting on the deck of our home reading after dinner in the evening with candles all around until after sunset; birds singing; the secession of different perennial flowers coming into bloom; better weather to be outdoors more often; restaurants with outdoor patio seating.
My family are not big campers but we love the slower pace of summer and the time outside. We have short summers here in New England so we try to take advantage of a beautiful day as much as we can, bike rides, picnics and trips to the beach. Enjoy your summer!

With back issues camping is not our thing, we prefer a comfy hotel and a restaurants. When the kids were young is was all about Disney Land (we are about 3-4 hours drive away) as they got older we started visiting other small towns going N and Monterrey Bay Aquarium has always been a favorite place to go, a bit prices so not an every summer event. Your camping trips sound like a great family bonding time, which it what it is really all about. 8)
